eGrocery

Last mile food deliveries to the customer

The E-Grocery sector is growing rapidly, which poses new challenges for companies in the food retail sector, especially when it comes to last-mile delivery. One of the biggest hurdles is maintaining the cold chain to ensure a constant temperature throughout the transportation process.

At the same time, companies need to optimize delivery costs and ensure product quality as customer expectations for product variety and freshness increase. In order to remain competitive, costefficient and quality-oriented solutions are essential.

va-Q-tec offers a perfect answer to these challenges with its innovative, passive packaging solutions. Our technologies enable a constant temperature without additional energy source. This eliminates the need for dry ice and refrigerated vehicles, which leads to a significant reduction in electricity and operating costs. The cold chain remains intact without any gaps, while the quality of the food is maintained throughout the entire transportation process. This results in fewer complaints and greater customer satisfaction.

Overall, these solutions offer a sustainable, cost-efficient and high-quality delivery that optimally meets both, the customer demands and economic requirements.

Upgrade or develop customized solutions

va-Q-tec offers the option of upgrading customers‘ existing transportation solutions with the highly efficient Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) and lids including Phase Change Materials (PCMs). All adaptations enable reliable temperature control and optimize the transportation process, according to the specific needs of our customers.

In addition to upgrading existing transport boxes, va-Q-tec offers customized solutions for the E-Grocery sector. This involves creating fully customized boxes that are tailored to the customer‘s requirements and needs in close cooperation with them. The development of these solutions follows a clearly defined and proven process. This ensures that each solution is optimally tailored to the customer‘s specific requirements.

We work closely with our customers to develop individual and customized solutions for the e-grocery sector, systematically following a proven process.

Analysis & Concept Development

va-Q-tec analyzes the current process and develops a tailor-made concept that takes size, temperature requirements and special requests into account. This also includes comprehensive advice on the required pre-cooling. The developed concept is tested with proven in-house simulation software and adapted if necessary.

Prototypes & Tests

An initial prototype is produced in order to compare it with the current processes and to check its performance, handling and efficiency in initial tests. Based on the test results, the concept is optimized to further improve functionality and efficiency. If required, the concept can be qualified in the inhouse laboratory with over 30 climate chambers or by independent partners.

Production

After concept validation, the production phase begins at va-Q-tec. During this phase, customers receive comprehensive on-site support, including implementation assistance, staff training, video tutorials and information material to ensure smooth integration of the solution into existing operations.

Post-live Operation

After the initial operating phase, a results analysis is carried out to evaluate the performance of the solution. Furthermore, additional services such as repair and maintenance processes can be implemented to reduce future costs and offer a comprehensive service.

Comparison of different Passive Solutions

In order to evaluate the economic efficiency of different passive cooler solutions, the following calculation example compares the costs of the conventional solution with dry ice, the conventional solution with two ice packs and the va-Q-box solutions for the fresh and frozen ranges.

The evaluation is based on 5,000 transport units per year in the frozen area (“Frozen”) and 20,000 transport units in the fresh area (“Fresh”), spread over 300 delivery days per year. The required thermal performance of the passive systems used is between 8 and 12 hours. In addition, it is ensured that pre-cooling of the cooling elements or batteries can be realized within 24 hours before delivery. The economic analysis period for investments and useful life is five years.

To ensure comparability of the solutions examined, a simplification was made: All passive systems considered have identical external and internal dimensions as well as the same total weight. This neutralizes volume and weight-related influences on logistics and handling.

This analysis does not take into account other economic and infrastructural factors such as capital costs (interest), conversion or changeover costs, employee training and structural measures for specific refrigeration technologies such as dry ice. The additional qualitative benefits of technological high-tech solutions, such as the reduction in complaints, are also left out of the equation – although experience from individual customers indicates up to 40% fewer complaints in the frozen and fresh food sector. Potential investments for the expansion or modernization of cold stores are also not included in the analysis. These clearly defined framework conditions enable a factually reliable and practical comparison of the pure product performance and operating costs of passive refrigeration solutions.

Yes. As the goods are kept cool independently within the box, no refrigerated vehicles are required. The goods can be transported in standard vans or lorries.

Thanks to a significant reduction in operating costs, the systems usually pay for themselves within a year. Depending on the process, costs relating to transport, energy consumption and handling can be significantly reduced.

Many boxes feature cooling elements permanently integrated into the lid. This simplifies the packing process and reduces the risk of cooling elements being left out. This enhances process reliability, ensures stable temperatures and reduces picking errors as well as spoiled goods. This improves delivery quality in the last mile and can reduce the complaint rate by up to 40% in the frozen and fresh food sectors.

Yes. va-Q-tec provides structured support throughout the transition – from analysing existing processes, through thermal simulations and prototyping, to on-site staff training. This results in a solution that fits seamlessly into the existing logistics system, both technically and operationally.

va-Q-tec offers both purchase and rental options, thereby providing maximum flexibility when it comes to implementation and scaling.

Yes. va-Q-tec offers development services to thermally upgrade existing containers by integrating VIPs or special PCM lids. This allows existing systems to continue to be used, reduces investment costs and significantly improves temperature stability during transport. At the same time, processes can be made more efficient without completely changing existing logistics structures.

By eliminating the need for dry ice, reducing energy consumption and enabling the systems to be reused multiple times, emissions, waste volumes and ongoing operating costs can be significantly reduced. This helps companies make their logistics operations more cost-effective and sustainable. In specific cases, customers have been able to reduce their CO₂ emissions by up to 70% using va-Q-tec solutions.
