Vacuum-Insulated Transport Boxes for Hahn Bakery

Bäckerei Hahn ensures cold chain for over 60 retail stores with va-Q-trays

  • 2,500 va-Q-trays from va-Q-tec deployed under a rental model
  • Vacuum insulation maintains the required temperatures for chilled and frozen products, even during the record-breaking summer of 2026
  • Projected annual savings of approximately €100,000 over the long term
  • Standardised dimensions enable seamless integration into existing logistics operations

“Bäckerei Hahn”, a bakery based in Geiselhoering in Lower Bavaria, relies on temperature-controlled transport boxes from va-Q-tec to maintain the cold chain for chilled and frozen bakery products. A total of 2,500 va-Q-trays facilitate reliable deliveries of chilled baked goods and frozen dough pieces to 65 bakery branches within a radius of approximately 70 kilometres of the company’s central bakery in Geiselhoering. Founded in 1912, the family business serves customers throughout the surrounding regions of Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate. By deploying these passive cooling containers, Bäckerei Hahn has no need of active refrigeration systems in its delivery vehicles.

“We deliberately decided against investing in new, costly refrigerated vehicles, as the vacuum-insulated transport boxes of va-Q-tec maintain stable temperatures while helping us reduce costs. Their standardised dimensions also make integration into our existing logistics infrastructure easy. In day-to-day operations, we have additionally been able to streamline our delivery processes, as products remain chilled inside the boxes even after delivery,”

Benedikt Hahn, Managing Director of Bäckerei Hahn

This performance is made possible by the high-performance vacuum insulation integrated into the va-Q-trays. It maintains the required temperature for several hours without any external energy supply. The handling process is straightforward: chilled and frozen products are put directly into the va-Q-trays and subsequently transported in conventional delivery vehicles without refrigeration units. The containers are compatible with standard small load carriers (SLC), allowing them to be incorporated into existing logistics processes without requiring operational restructuring.

Rental Model Reduces Financial Pressure in a Challenging Economic Environment

The key factor in Bäckerei Hahn’s decision was a total cost assessment that considered not only the initial purchase price but also ongoing operating costs and compliance with all quality standards. Compared with the acquisition of new refrigerated vehicles, the figures clearly favoured va-Q-tec’s energy-independent va-Q-trays. Over the long term, Bäckerei Hahn expects to achieve annual savings of approximately €100,000. va-Q-tec’s rental model proved particularly attractive, enabling the bakery to avoid substantial upfront capital expenditure at a time of economic uncertainty for the sector. va-Q-tec also provides on-site advice to help improve logistics processes.

“Bakeries are paying particularly close attention to costs and liquidity at present. Our rental model enables them to deploy passive cooling solutions in line with their operational requirements, adjust their usage flexibly and reduce operating costs at the same time. We work closely with each bakery to review its delivery routes and processes, helping to make the switch to passive cooling cost-effective from the outset. With rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves, protecting temperature-sensitive products during the last mile of delivery is becoming increasingly important for bakeries,”

Marc Moelter, Head of Sales Food at va-Q-tec

Proven Performance During the Record-Breaking Summer of 2026

According to the German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD), the summer of 2026 ranked among the hottest since weather records began. Temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) were recorded in Bavaria at times. Even under these extreme conditions, Bäckerei Hahn maintained reliable cold-chain performance without relying on active refrigeration technology in its delivery vehicles, thereby keeping fuel consumption correspondingly low.
